 ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Auxiliary Police are the "trained eyes and ears" of the regular police. Just the presence of the police uniform can help to prevent vandalism and other problems. We are always looking for new members who are dedicated to making their community a safe place to live.

What Auxiliary Police Officers do:

  • Relieve regular police officers for other duties.

  • Provide more visible patrols to reduce burglaries and acts of vandalism.
  • Aid in traffic control in areas around major accidents and emergencies.
  • Patrol and/or march during parades and special events.
  • Provide crime awareness programs for community organizations and schools.

The Auxiliary Police patrol the precinct joined in by foot or by vehicle. Most precincts have at least one Auxiliary Police Vehicle. Auxiliary Police Officers patrol designated foot posts, or patrol in the neighborhood with Auxiliary Police vehicles. Many times, special patrols or assignments are given, and besides patrolling Auxiliaries are assisting police and the community to help keep the community safe. For example, see the pictures section for the Auxiliary Police during the Blackout of 2003.

How do you benefit from joining?:

  • Satisfaction in knowing that you are serving your community.

  • The new friends you will meet in both the Auxiliary and Regular Police Departments
  • Excellent experience for students enrolled in criminal justice programs.
  • Many colleges give up to 3 credits after attending the Basic Training Program (required to join).
  • Many colleges will give you up to a 10% discount on tuition for joining the program.
  • Provides excellent opportunities for future law enforcement employment.
